Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x9-inch baking dish or an 8x8-inch square pan.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, applesauce, maple syrup (or honey), vanilla extract, and egg until blended and frothy.

Mixing

  • Stir in the rolled oats, cinnamon, and salt until everything is well combined.
  • Gently fold the chopped apples into the oatmeal mixture.

Baking

  • Pour the oatmeal mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until the top is golden and the oatmeal is set.
  • If using walnuts or pecans, sprinkle them on top in the last 10 minutes of baking.

Serving

  • Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Drizzle extra maple syrup on top if desired.

Notes

Consider adding a pinch of nutmeg or raisins for extra flavor. Substitute half the milk with yogurt for a creamier texture. For a vegan option, swap the egg for a flax egg.
