  • 1 15-ounce can diced tomatoes, undrained Brings moisture and tang.
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt Enhances flavors.
  • 0.5 teaspoon pepper For a gentle kick.
  • 0.5 teaspoon sugar Balances the acidity.
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seed For a hint of unique flavor.
  • 1 8-ounce can tomato sauce For creaminess.
  • 1 cup reduced-fat sour cream Adds silkiness.
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese Provides a gooey, melty top layer.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Lightly grease or spray a deep 13 x 9 baking dish.
  • Place the shredded cabbage in the bottom of the baking dish.

Cooking

  • In a skillet over medium heat, brown and crumble the ground beef (or turkey) along with the chopped onion and red bell pepper.
  • Drain any excess fat and return the mixture to the skillet.
  • Add the undrained diced tomatoes, salt, pepper, sugar, and caraway seeds to the drained beef mixture and stir well.
  • Spread this mixture evenly over the cabbage layer in your baking dish.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the tomato sauce and sour cream until well blended, then spread it over the beef mixture.
  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour.
  • Uncover the dish and sprinkle the shredded Swiss cheese over the top, then bake uncovered for an additional 15-20 minutes.

Notes

For additional flavor, consider adding minced garlic to the beef or mixing in diced jalapeños. You can also substitute Swiss cheese with mozzarella or cheddar for a different taste.
