Instructions

Preparation

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the pasta shells according to the package directions until al dente, about 10-12 minutes. Drain and set aside to cool slightly.
  • While the shells are cooking, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess fat, then stir in minced garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  • In a bowl, combine ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan cheese, and the egg. Add the cooked ground beef mixture and stir until well combined.

Assembly and Baking

  • Carefully stuff each pasta shell with the ricotta and beef mixture.
  • Arrange the stuffed shells in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Pour marinara sauce evenly over the stuffed shells, ensuring full coverage. Sprinkle remaining mozzarella or Parmesan on top.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 20-25 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly. For a golden top, broil for 2-3 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven, let rest for a few minutes, garnish with fresh basil, and serve warm.

Notes

Optional additions include sautéed spinach or mushrooms to the filling. Prepare the filling in advance and stuff before baking. Using homemade marinara can enhance flavor.
