Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to the temperature specified on the cake mix box. Prepare your chocolate cake according to the instructions provided or use your favorite homemade recipe.
  • Pour the batter into a 9-inch round pan and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely.
  • While the cake is cooling, whisk together the instant chocolate pudding mix and two cups of cold milk in a medium bowl. Allow the mixture to thicken for about five minutes.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whip together the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.

Assembly

  • Start layering in a large trifle dish or glass bowl by adding the cake cubes at the bottom.
  • Top with a layer of chocolate pudding and then a layer of cherry pie filling. Repeat the layers until the dish is full, finishing with a layer of whipped cream.
