  • 6 medium russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream for rich texture
  • 1 cup whole milk for creaminess
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter for richness
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced for flavor
  • 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese for classic flavor
  • 0.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese for added savoriness
  • 1 tsp salt to enhance flavors
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper for a hint of spice
  • 0.25 tsp ground nutmeg optional, for warmth
  • to taste Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and add minced garlic. Sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  • Pour in heavy cream and whole milk, then add salt, pepper, and optional nutmeg. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  • Stir in 1 cup of cheddar cheese and grated Parmesan until melted into a smooth sauce.
  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish and pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  • Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  • Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese on top.

Baking

  • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
  • Allow to rest for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For added flavor, consider using smoked cheddar cheese or incorporating sautéed vegetables like spinach or caramelized onions. You may also top with breadcrumbs mixed with melted butter for extra crunch.
