  • 1 loaf French bread Cut in half lengthwise
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil For brushing the bread
  • 3 cloves garlic Minced

For the Sloppy Joe Filling

  • 1 lb ground beef Can substitute with ground turkey or plant-based alternatives
  • 1 medium onion Finely chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper Finely chopped
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese Shredded

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Cut the French bread in half lengthwise and brush each cut side generously with olive oil.
  • Sprinkle the minced garlic evenly over the surface of the bread.

Baking

  • Bake the garlic bread in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until crispy and golden.

Cooking the Filling

  • While the bread is baking, heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, onion, and green bell pepper to the pan.
  • Cook until the meat is browned and the vegetables are tender.
  • Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  • Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes.

Assembly

  • Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture over the toasted garlic bread, covering every inch generously.
  • Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top.

Final Baking

  • Return the loaded garlic bread to the oven for another 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Remove from the oven, cut into slices, and serve warm.

Notes

For a kick of heat, add chili powder or crushed red pepper. For a lighter option, substitute ground beef with ground turkey or plant-based alternatives.
