  • 2 tbsp red food coloring Providing that signature velvet hue.
  • 1 tsp white distilled vinegar Helping to activate the baking soda.
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract Infusing the cake with sweet aroma.

For the Frosting

  • 1 pound cream cheese, softened Forming the base of the lush frosting.
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature For a creamy consistency.
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract Enhancing the frosting flavor.
  • 4 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar For that sweet, fluffy finish.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and flouring them or lining them with parchment paper for easy release.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, white vinegar, and vanilla extract. Beat until fully blended.
  • Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring until smooth and lump-free.
  • Add in the purple food coloring incrementally, mixing until you reach your desired shade.

Baking

  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and bake for 25-30 minutes. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center; it should come out clean.
  • Allow cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting

  • While the cakes are cooling, prepare the frosting. In a large bowl, combine softened cream cheese and butter, beating until creamy and smooth.
  • Add the vanilla extract and gradually mix in the sifted confectioners’ sugar until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.

Assembly

  • Once the cakes are fully cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of cream cheese frosting over the top.
  • Place the second layer on top and use the remaining frosting to cover the entire cake.
  • Feel free to decorate the cake with colorful sprinkles or edible flowers for an extra touch of beauty.
  • Slice, serve, and enjoy!

Notes

For a deeper purple hue, experiment with adding a few extra drops of purple food coloring to your batter. Ensure ingredients are at room temperature for a smoother batter. Consider incorporating finely chopped nuts or chocolate chips into the batter for added texture. Always sift confectioners’ sugar to avoid lumps in frosting.
