Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 1 box red velvet cake mix or your own homemade version for a personal touch
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil lending a silken texture
  • 3 large eggs rich and golden
  • 1 cup water ensuring moist cake layers
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract aromatic and sweet

For the Cream Filling

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream for that luscious, cloud-like texture
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar to sweeten the cream perfectly
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for whipped cream, enhancing the flavor
  • 1 1/2 cups cream cheese softened and creamy, perfect for layering
  • 1/4 cup sugar bringing balance to the cream cheese filling
  • 1/2 cup sour cream adding a tangy richness
  • 1/4 cup milk for a velvety consistency

For Garnish

  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips optional for garnish, adding a touch of indulgence
  • 1 cup fresh raspberries or strawberries optional for garnish, vibrant and refreshing

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  • In a large mixing bowl, prepare the red velvet cake mix according to the package directions: combine the cake mix, vegetable oil, eggs, water, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Mix until the batter is smooth.
  • Pour the cake batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely.
  • Once cooled, cut the cake into 1-inch cubes.

Cream Filling

  • In a large bowl, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract together until soft peaks form.
  • In another bowl, beat together cream cheese, sugar, sour cream, and milk until smooth.
  • Gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture.

Assembly

  • Begin layering the cake cubes at the bottom of a trifle dish or individual serving glasses.
  • Spoon a layer of the cream cheese mixture over the cake cubes.
  • Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of cream cheese mixture.
  • Garnish with chocolate chips and fresh berries.
  • Refrigerate for at least 2-4 hours or overnight.

Notes

Ensure the cake is completely cooled before cutting to avoid a messy assembly. Over-whipping the cream can lead to a grainy texture. Use low-fat cream cheese or substitute some sugar with natural sweeteners for healthier alternatives.
