Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend) This hearty blend ensures juicy and flavorful patties.
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced Sweet, caramelized onions add layers of flavor and richness.
  • 8 slices American cheese Melty goodness that binds the sandwich together beautifully.
  • 8 slices Texas toast Thick, fluffy slices that provide the perfect base.
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter For that rich, golden crust and a buttery flavor.
  • Salt and pepper to taste Essential for seasoning the beef.

For the Creamy Pepper Sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise Adds creaminess and tang.
  • 2 tbsp ketchup A touch of sweetness.
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce For depth of flavor.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder A key flavor booster.
  • 1 tsp onion powder Enhances the onion flavor.
  • 2 tsp freshly ground black pepper Adds a delightful kick.

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions

  • In a skillet over low heat, add a pinch of salt to sliced onions and sauté them slowly. Cook for about 20 minutes until they turn golden brown and soft, releasing their natural sweetness. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.

Form and Cook Patties

  • Shape the ground beef into 4 oval patties, making them about the same size as the bread to ensure perfect coverage. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.
  • Using the same skillet, cook the patties over medium-high heat for about 4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness. Remove and set aside.

Prepare Creamy Pepper Sauce

  • In a mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and freshly ground black pepper. Mix until all ingredients are fully blended, creating a creamy, flavorful sauce.

Assemble and Toast

  • Spread butter on one side of each slice of Texas toast. On the unbuttered side of the bread, spread a layer of creamy pepper sauce. Begin layering with a slice of American cheese, a beef patty, some caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and finish with another slice of bread (buttered side facing out).
  • Toast in the skillet over medium heat until each side is beautifully golden brown and the cheese has melted.

Serve

  • Cut the patty melts in half, allow them to cool for a minute, and serve hot alongside your favorite sides such as fries, salad, or even a simple coleslaw.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding spices like smoked paprika or chili powder to the beef patties before cooking. If you don’t have Texas toast, any thick-cut bread will work, but Texas toast gives that perfect crunch and texture. Consider adding fresh toppings like lettuce or sliced tomatoes right before serving for added crunch. If you enjoy a bit of heat, incorporate sliced jalapeños or a drizzle of hot sauce into each sandwich. Aim to have your ingredients at room temperature before cooking to ensure even cooking and a perfectly melted cheese layer.
