Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients into the butter mixture, stirring until just combined.
  • Divide the dough in half, flour your workspace, and roll out one portion to about ¼-inch thickness.
  • Use cookie cutters to create heart shapes or other designs, and place them on the prepared baking sheet.

Baking

  • Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  • Allow cooling on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Decorating

  • Once cooled, decorate with frosting and festive sprinkles.

Notes

For softer cookies, do not overbake. Add sprinkles or chocolate chips for a fun twist. Can substitute half the flour for almond flour for a nutty flavor.
